The UK is facing a weekend of severe weather, with the Met Office issuing multiple thunderstorm warnings. Heavy rain, strong winds, and dangerous lightning are all expected, and an “amber” warning—which means there is a danger to life—is now in effect for tomorrow.

Here’s a summary of the key information from the Met Office warning:

What Happens When: The first storms are expected to arrive today; perhaps this will be the more disruptive storm period which will develop from tonight through to the weekend.

What it Means for Location: Its a national alert; there are significant risks in parts of northern England and the South-East, which is mainly for flash flooding.

The types of weather expected will include:

sudden and heavy downpours, which may bring the equivalent of a month of rain in a few hours;

poor visibility and slippery roads will create deadly driving conditions;

power cuts amongst other transport delays (trains, road, buses) will all affect the journey for many;

the force of the winds might damage buildings and knowledge of electrical storms is normally associated with lightening not hurricane or similar winds.

Be Safe: The Met Office strongly advised the great part of everyone who has to go outdoors take precautions. At least whilst the storms are taking place, avoid non-essential outdoor activities. It is also strongly recommended to stay away from tall trees, power supply, power lines, overhead cables and all metal objects in the event of lightning, when travelling outside! If you’re in a risky location look at the flood warnings and make sure you follow your risk plan.

As the UK’s weather becomes more unpredictable, the storms this weekend are a timely reminder to remain vigilant and informed, and you should continue to monitor your local weather forecasts and alerts.
